We’re thrilled to introduce our January Mom of the Month, Megan Sevart-Culbertson — mom of four, devoted wife, and the heart behind Megan’s Yoga Tribe! Based in the Southeast Kansas City area, Megan has built a powerful community rooted in connection, compassion, and presence.
What began as a personal healing practice during early motherhood has grown into a thriving yoga community serving thousands across multiple studios, live online classes, and an expansive on-demand library — all centered on belonging, breath, and balance.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
Hi I’m Megan Sevart-Culbertson, founder of Megan’s Yoga Tribe, wife to Chris who I love fiercely, and a mom of 4 amazing kids: plus a new dog mom to my beloved puppy, Happy.
I’ve lived in the Kansas City area for most of my adult life and opened MYT with one mission: to create a world with more love and peace using a yoga mat and community. To create studios where people feel like they belong, breathe easier, and leave class feeling lighter. We now serve thousands of students across 3 studios, live Zoom mornings, and a VOD library 3,000+ classes strong.
What inspired you to start your business?
I started yoga after I had my first baby almost 20 years ago as a busy mom who desperately needed an outlet that wasn’t about perfection. Yoga gave me breath, patience, and a place to heal. When I said yes to teacher training 10 years ago, it changed everything — not just for me, but for the community MYT would become. I built MYT to be the studio I needed: no mirrors, no ego, no judgment, no competition.
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
Early mornings are mine — meditation, breathwork, and movement before the world wakes up. Then it’s the juggle: school drop-offs, meetings, classes, team support, planning retreats, responding to clients, studio walkthroughs, and always a cup of tea in hand. Evenings are homework, dinner, laughter, and corralling kids + puppy energy. It’s a mix of heartwork and real mom chaos, beautifully imperfect.
What’s been the most rewarding part of running your business?
The community. Hands down. Seeing people walk in stressed, and leave lighter. Watching friendships form. Hearing “I needed this today.” I cry happy tears reading reviews because MYT has become a safe landing place for so many, including me.
What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship?
The challenge is the balance. As a Type A, recovering overachiever and perfectionist, learning to pause has been my biggest work. I handle it with the tools I teach: breath first, movement second, community always. And asking for help when needed, from my husband, my team, my people.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting a business?
Start messy. Start small. Start scared. Just start. You don’t have to have it all figured out, you just have to follow your heart and purpose to take the next right step and you will learn as you grow. The world needs what moms build from love, not perfection.
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
We love traveling together — weekend road trips, flights to somewhere warm, or finding new places to explore as a family. We’re also big on showing up to cheer on our kids’ sports — cross-country meets, basketball games, track days, and watching them chase goals that make us proud. MYT taught me presence over perfection, and that’s the gift I bring home to them, whether we’re in a new city together or on the sidelines, bundled up, screaming encouragement like it’s an Olympic sport.
