We’re excited to introduce our Mom of the Month, Tiffany Kim — mom of three and the visionary behind MY Play Café! What began as a simple need for a space where parents could relax while their little ones played has grown into a beloved community hub across the Kansas City area. Through her warm leadership and family-first approach, Tiffany has created a place where friendships flourish, memories are made, and moms can finally take a well-deserved breath.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
I’m originally from San Francisco, CA. But lived in Lee’s Summit for half my life! I have 3 children, Jedi (8), Obi (6) & Aliyah Rae (4) and yes, I am the Star Wars fan. I taught Montessori Preschool for 6 years and Pediatric Nursing at CMH for 6 years.
What inspired you to start your business?
At the time, I had two children under two and there was no where I could take my children and enjoy a good conversations with a friend. Most places were too big and we would have to follow our children around. I opened MY Play Cafe to give moms a mental break.
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
I’m the early days of 2020, I would bring all three children into MY Play Cafe to run the shop. Now, I have a strong team that takes care of the day to day. While I work behind the scenes from my on-the-go office.
What has been the most rewarding part of your business?
The amazing community and friendships I have been able to make and observe. I’ve made some life long friendships here. Moms are not only making friends at MY Play Cafe, they also go out and do other things together. Lee’s Summit was the first location, but concept was so important that I also have two other licensed location, that are also locally owned and operated.

What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and how do you handle them?
Mom guilt is real. Especially when the children and business needs you. I protect my family time after hours. Phone call, social media inquiries and emails are handled during normal business hours.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting their own business?
Build a strong support system and find mentors who have gone before you. Having a great idea is only a small part of running a business—there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work people don’t see, like finances, taxes, and navigating the ups and downs of the economy.
It’s incredibly rewarding to build something meaningful for your family and community, but it’s also real, messy work. The right support can make all the difference.
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
We love supporting other local businesses! We are always out and about. For the toddler years, I used to joke “If we aren’t home, the kids cannot make a mess.” But we are embracing more of the home life now with our chickens and garden.
