This month, we’re excited to introduce Megan, a mom of three and the owner of River Trail Threads, a Kansas City–inspired handmade kids clothing brand. What started as sewing for fun after her first son was born quickly grew into a business creating comfortable, durable, and fun clothing for kids. Inspired by Kansas City life, game days, and everyday adventures, Megan designs clothing that kids love to wear and parents feel good about buying.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
Hi there! I'm Megan Pollema, owner of River Trail Threads. I am a former nurse practitioner who unexpectedly found her way into kids clothing design! My husband and I have lived in the KC area for about 18 years. I am a mom of three awesome kids. Silas is 9, Lucy is 7, and Ezra is 3. My kids are the reason my clothes fit and function the way they do — they test everything.

What inspired you to start your business?
I started sewing for fun in 2016 after my first son was born. I loved finding unique fabrics and creating things you could not find in big box stores. Two years later, I created my first Kansas City piece when I couldn’t find a stylish and comfortable game day hair bow for my newborn daughter. River Trail Threads has since grown into a handmade clothing brand for kids-rooted in Kansas City and Midwest life. I love creating fun and comfortable clothing that both parents and kids love!
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
Mornings are usually crazy and all about getting kids out the door! The rest of the day is a mix of sewing, packing orders, answering messages, planning new collections and creating social media content. Evenings are spent eating dinner together and then taking the kids to their different activities. A lot of my work happens when my kids are at school, practice, or late at night. Some days are calm and productive, others are chaotic, but I’ve learned to embrace the flexibility and roll with it.
What has been the most rewarding part of your business?
Hands down, it’s hearing from other KC families who say my clothes have become their kids’ favorites — whether it’s a game-day outfit or something they wear all week long. Knowing my pieces are part of everyday life, not just special occasions, is incredibly meaningful.
What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and how do you handle them?
Balancing it all can be hard, and I have come to realize there is no such thing as perfect balance. There’s always more to do, and as a mom, someone always needs something. My husband and I make a good team, and I can always count on him to help me when I need it. I’ve also learned to let go of perfection, focus on what matters most in each season, and give myself grace when things don’t go exactly as planned.

What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting their own business?
Start small and don’t wait until everything feels “ready.” If you wait until everything is perfect, you will never start! Build something that fits into your family’s life instead of working against it. And don’t be afraid to do things differently — sometimes that’s what makes your business stand out.
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
We love traveling together, camping, and spending time outdoors. A lot of our time is spent cheering our kids on at everything from baseball games to piano recitals. We’re big on Kansas City life, so we love watching KC sports, eating at local restaurants, and exploring new places in our community.
